Indian Camp By Hemingway Essay Ernest Hemingway pulled from his past present experiences to develop his ownthoughts concerning death, relationships, and lies. He then mixed these ideas,along with a familiar setting, to create a masterpiece. One such masterpiecewritten early in Hemingways career is the short story, Indian Camp.Indian Camp was originally published in the collection of inOur Time in 1925. A brief summary reveals that the main character, ateenager by the name of Nick, travels across a lake to an Indian village. Whileat the village Nick observes his father, who is a doctor, deliver a baby to anIndian by caesarian section. As the story continues, Nicks father discoversthat the newborns father has committed suicide. Soon afterward Nick and hisfather engage in a discussion about death, which brings the story to an end. With thought and perception a reader can tell the meaning of the story. Thecharters of Nick and his father resemble the relationship of Hemingway and hisfather. Hemingway grew up in Oak Park, a middle class suburb, under the watchfuleye of his parents, Ed and Grace Hemingway. Ed Hemingway was a doctor whooccasionally took his son along on professional visits across Walloon Laketo the Ojibway Indians during summer vacations (Waldhorn 7). These medicaltrips taken by Ernest and Ed would provide the background information needed tointroduce nick and his father while on their medical trip in IndianCamp. These trips were not the center point of affection between Ed andErnest, but they were part of the whole. The two always shared a closefather-son bond that Hemingway often portrayed in his works: Nicks closeattachment to his father parallels Hemingways relationship with Ed. The growingboy finds in the father, in both fiction and life, not only a teacher-guide butalso a fixed refuge against the terrors of the emotional and spiritual unknownas they are encountered. In his father Ernest had someone to lean on (Shaw 14). In Indian Camp, nick stays in his fathers arms for a sense ofsecurity and this reinforces their close father-son relationship. When Nick seesthe terror of death, in the form of suicide, his father is right there tocomfort him. From this we are able to see how Nick has his father to, physicallyand mentally, lean on, much like Hemingway did (Shaw 11). Hemingways love for his father was not always so positive though, and he oftenexpressed his feelings about his situation though his literature. WhenHemmingway was young, his father persuaded him to have his tonsils removed by afriend, Dr. Wesley Peck. Even though it was Dr. Peck who performed the painfuloperation, Hemingway always held it against his father for taking out histonsils without an anaesthetic (Meyers 48). Hemingway saw the opportunityto portray his father in Indian Camp as the cold-hearted man who hadhis tonsils yanked out without anaesthetic. In a reply to Nicks question aboutgiving the Indian woman something to stop screaming, his father states,No. I havent any anaestheticBut her screams are not important. I donthear them because they are not important. (Tessitore 18) Hemingway lashedout at his father one more time before the story ends. In IndianCamp, Hemingway uses the conversation between Nick and his father,concerning the suicide of the Indian, to show his distaste for his own fatherssuicide: Why did he kill himself, Daddy? I dont know Nick. He couldntstand things, I guess. Do many men kill themselves, Daddy? Not very many,Nick Is dying hard, Daddy? No, I think its pretty easy, Nick. It alldepends. (Hemingway 19) Hemingway saw his father as a weak working man whoserved his wife, Grace, unconditionally. Ed worked a full day to come home toclean house, prepare food, and tend to the children. He had promised Grace thatif she would marry him, she would not have to do housework for as long as helived. Ill and depressed, Ed committed suicide in 1928. Hemingway later referredto the situation by stating: I hated my mother as soon as I knew the scoreand loved my father until he embarrassed me with his cowardiceMy mother is anall time all American bitch and she would make a pack mule shoot himself, letalone poor bloody father. (Meyers 212) Hemingway uses IndianCamp to express his feelings that his father was a coward. He did this byhaving Nicks father refer to suicide as being pretty easy, which iscomparable to a cowards way out of life. Therefore, Hemingway uses the story toportray his fathers death as cowardly. The characters and setting ofIndian Camp are undoubtedly influenced by Hemingways Childhood. Inmuch of the same respect, Hemingways second novel, A Farewell to Arms, hasinfluences from his adult years spent in the war. A Farewell to Arms is a tragiclove story in the midst of war. The main character, Fredrick Henry, is anambulance driver in World War I who is wounded in the trenches. Henry, now acasualty, is sent to recover at an American hospital in Milan. During his stay,henry falls in love with a nurse by the name of Catherine Barkley. The couplethen heads for Switzerland to escape the war and have a child. The novel takesan evil twist at the end though. Catherine dies while she is in labor, leavingHenry alone in the world. When comparing Ernest Hemingway and the characterFrederick Henry, there are some very obvious re semblances. After not beingallowed to join the army due to bad vision in his left eye, Hemingway joined thewar effort during 1918 in Italy as an ambulance driver. Likewise, Hemingway madesure that Henry was also an ambulance driver in A Farewell to Arms. The mostnoticeable similarity is Hemingways war wound. While passing out chocolate andcigarettes to soldiers at night, Hemingway was hit by a mortar shell. Wounded,but not dead, Hemingway picked up an nearby casualty and began carrying him offthe battlefield. He succeeded in making it to the first aid center but was hitin the knees by machine-gun fire while on his journey. During his recover inMilan, Hemingway recorded his firsthand account of the action in a letterwritten to his parents. Big Scandal By: Jessica Morash Above shows defence Atticus Finch and Tom Robinson Under the authority of Judge Taylor in the small town of Maycomb County, a black man named Tom Robinson (age twenty-five) was allegedly accused of raping Mayella Ewell (age nineteen). The events being told had originally happened according to defense Atticus Finch, when we heard him ask the alleged accused, â€Å"Tom, what had happened to you on the night of November twenty-first of last year? † One of the first witnesses is called to the stand by Mr. Gilmer to testify on what happened the night Miss Ewell stated that she was raped. The first witness was Heck Tate, Maycomb’s sheriff. According to his testimony, Mr. Tate stated that he was just leaving to go home when, â€Å"Mr. Ewell (Mayella’s father) came in, very excited he was, and said get out to his house quick, [a black man] raped his girl. Asked her if he took advantage of her and she said yes he did. So I went down to Robinson’s house and brought him back. She identified him as the one, so I took him in. That’s all there was to it,† he finished, and the Judge proceeded by asking if Atticus Finch would like to ask any questions to Mr. Tate, and responded yes. Mr. Finch, seeming very relaxed with his legs crossed and arm on the back of his chair asked, â€Å"Did you call a doctor, Sheriff? Did anybody call a doctor? In response Mr. Tate stated that no, he did not call a doctor. However, Mr. Finch wanted to make it clear to everyone in the room; he repeated himself twice more and in reaction to doing this, he responded with, â€Å"I just wanted to make sure, Judge. † Afterward, we’ve learned that Miss Ewell had gotten many bruises, as we ll as around the neck and had a black eye on her right side. Shortly after, we heard the name, â€Å"Robert E. Lee Ewell! † to be called to the stand. The man was very small, meek he was. Mr. Ewell started off by saying his first words as, â€Å"That’s m’name, cap’n,† and you could see Mr. Gilmer’s back stiffen as he spoke. Mr. Ewell was then asked if he was the father of Mayella Ewell to which he retorted, â€Å"Well if I ain’t I can’t do nothing about it now, her ma’s dead. † Judge Taylor stirred, re-asked the question, then Mr. Ewell came back with his words and said, â€Å"Yes, sir. † Mr. Gilmer then proceeded to ask Mr. Ewell what had happened in his own words. He started, â€Å"Well, the night of November twenty-one I was comin’ in from the woods with a load o’kindlin and just as I got to the fence I heard Mayella screamin’ like a stuck hog inside the house. † As Mr. Gilmer interrupted, he asked what time of the day it was, and to his response he continued, â€Å"Just ‘fore sundown. Well I was sayin’ Mayella was screamin’ fit to beat Jesus, so I dropped m’load and run as fast as I could up to th’ window and I seen-â€Å" His face grew scarlet red, and he pointed his finger to Mr. Tom Robinson. Continuing, â€Å"[†¦] I run for Tate quick as I could. I [knew] who it was, all right, lived down yonder [for fifteen years]. † Seeming hurried, Mr. Gilmer ended his session giving a quick, â€Å"Thank you, Mr. Ewell,† and returned to his seat. Shortly after Mr. Finch had risen as well as Mr. Ewell and both men ran right into each other, resulting a laughing court room. From this action, Mr. Finch asked if he could ask a few questions to Mr. Ewell. Atticus first asked if Mr. Ewell had ran to a doctor, this giving no surprise considered he already asked it three times before to Mr. Tate. In reply to Atticus, Mr. Ewell spoke, â€Å"[Wasn’t any] need to. I seen what happened. † Mr. Ewell also said that he agreed to everything Mr. Heck Tate said. Sure after this, Mr. Finch asked if Mr. Ewell could read or write, to which gave a small dispute with Mr. Gilmer because he didn’t think his literacy would have effect of the case. However Atticus overruled this by making sure to prove his point in the next question, which was following after Mr. Ewell responded with, â€Å"I most positively can. † So Mr. Finch gave Mr. Ewell a piece of paper and asked him to write his name and show everyone (just to prove he actually could read and write). It was seen that Mr. Ewell was left-handed, but he had no clue how this had effect, either. Atticus finally dismissed him. The third witness was called to the stand, we see that it was Mayella Violet Ewell. Judge Taylor started by saying, â€Å"Just tell us what happened. You can do that, can’t you? † This issues Mayella to burst out crying, covering her mouth. After a few minutes passed and Judge Taylor had calmed her down, Mr. Gilmer took over once again to ask questions. Miss Ewell then began by saying how she was on her front porch that evening while Mr. Robinson was walking by. She had asked him to chop up an old chiffarobe for kindling. â€Å"I said come here, [†¦] and bust up this old chiffarobe for me, I gotta nickel for you. He coulda done it easy enough, he could. So he come in the yard an’ I went in the house to get him the nickel and I turned around an ‘fore I knew it he was on me. Just run up behind me, he did. He got me round the neck, [cursing and saying fowl things] – I fought ‘n’ hollered, but he had me round the neck. He hit me again an’ again. † Mayella then finished with, â€Å"He done what he was after. † A while after Atticus had begun; he had asked Miss Ewell if her father had ever beaten her. In reply, â€Å"My [father] never touched a hair o’ my head in my life [†¦]. He never touched me. † Atticus then wanted to clarify that the man was Tom Robinson. He asked him to stand, and it revealed that Mr. Robinson’s left arm was shorter than his right which ended in a small shriveled hand that just hung by his side. Mr. Robinson supposedly had his arm caught in a cotton gin when he was a boy and it tore all of his muscles loose from his bones. Exposing this to the crowd, Atticus then asked, â€Å"Is this the man that raped you? † Confirmed that it was by Miss Mayella, Atticus’s next question was one word long: â€Å"How? † Miss Mayella was stuttering her answer revealing that it â€Å"all happened so fast,† and â€Å"I don’t know how he done it, he just did. By her saying this, Atticus replies back, â€Å"Now, Miss Mayella, you’ve testified that the defendant choked and beat you – you didn’t say that he sneaked up behind you and knocked you cold, but you turned around and there he was – do you wish to reconsider any of your testimony? † Regarding this, Miss May ella stood firm and didn’t change a thing. This is when Atticus asked one last time if she wanted to be open and tell us what happened. However, she wasn’t too impressed by Atticus’s invitation and yelled, â€Å"I got somethin’ to say an’ then I ain’t gonna say no more. That [man] yonder took advantage of me an’ If you fine fancy gentlemen don’t wanta do nothing about it then you’re all yellow stinkin’ cowards, stinkin’ cowards, the lot of you. Your fancy airs don’t come to nothin’ – your ma’amin’ and Miss Mayellaerin’ don’t come to nothin’ Mr. Finch! † and she burst out crying once again. The last witness left was called by Atticus. Tom Robinson sat down and Atticus started the questioning. He then asked Tom’s point of view of November twenty-first. He spoke clear, â€Å"Mr. Finch, I was going home as usual hat evenin’, and when I passed the Ewell place Miss Mayella were on the porch, like she said she were. It seemed real quiet like, an’ I didn’t quite know why. I was studyin’ why, just passin’ by, when she says for me to come there and help her a minute. Well, I went inside the fence and looked around for som e kindling to work on, but I didn’t see none, and she says, ‘No, I got something for you to do in the house. The old door’s off its hinges and falls coming on pretty fast. ’ I said you got a screwdriver, Miss Mayella? She said yes. [†¦]. I pulled it back and forth and those hinges was all right. Then she shut the door in my face. Mr. Finch, I was wondering why it was so quiet like, and it come to me that there weren’t a child on the place, not one of them, and I said Miss Mayella, where are the children? † She replied that they had gone to get ice cream. Then he continued, â€Å"Well, I said I best be goin’, I couldn’t do nothing for her, and she says oh yes I could, and I ask her what, and she says to just step on that chair yonder and get that box down from the top of the chiffarobe. Next thing I know, she grabbed me around the legs, and it scared me so bad. Tom continued and said that after he had gotten off the chair, she jumped on him, in a hugging manner, followed by Miss Mayella kissing Mr. Tom Robinson. He then stated that he had not raped Mayella Ewell, or had harmed her in any way. The final summation of the trial began with going over evidence. Judge Taylor was saying, â€Å"The absence of any corroborative evidence, this man was indic ted on a capital charge and is now on trial for his life. † About five minutes later Mr. Finch rises to the jury to begin his speech for defence of Tom Robinson. Following is the conclusion of the speech: â€Å"I’m no idealist to believe firmly in the integrity of our courts and in the jury system – that is no ideal to me, it is a living, working reality. Gentlemen, a court is no better than each man of you sitting before me on this jury. A court is only as sounds as its jury, and a jury is only as sounds as the men who make it up. Once he was elected Khrushchev (the Russian leader who was a Communist) tried to test the young president and see how far he could push the new American president. While in office Kennedy faced many obstacles that he had to overcome. Quite a few of them were against the Russians who were communists. After the second World War , Germany was split up into two new nations. One which was being controlled by the Russians ,that was called East Germany. In East Germany there was a communist government. The other nation was being controlled by England , France , and the US ,that was called West Germany. In West Germany there was a democratic government. The capitol of ?Old Germany? was the city of Berlin. Berlin was now located in East Germany. Berlin was split up into two different cities they were East and West Berlin. East Berlin was controlled by the communists. West Berlin was controlled by the democrats. On August 12, 1961 the Communists closed off the line between East and West Berlin and didn?t even let the commuters who worked in West Berlin but lived in East Berlin go to work. The trains and railroads were also cut off. Nobody knew how long this would be going on for. A reporter tried to cross the border of East Berlin and a guard said to him ?You are not allowed to go through we received instructions to this effect about an hour and age.? In 1961 people all over the US were debating if the US should go to war with the Russians and in August 1961 the pentagon ordered reservists to active service. Around 76,500 men most of them who were fathers and were in either World War Two or in the Korean War were being called to go back by the president. But after weeks of uncertainty and hopes and opinions that the whole crisis will ?somehow blow over? the reality of the crisis in Berlin struck America. A lot of times the crisis almost resulted in a war. One example is that two East German tankers squirted water from a powerful hose onto two young American GI?s. The GI?s were taught not to fire unless fired upon. So they reached for their grenades and were about to throw it when the tankers stopped spraying them. Events like this were not very rare. The troops on both sides were not easily provoked. The leaders on each side would try to do everything in their power to avoid a war. After a while there were rumors that Khrushchev wanted to have ?peace talks? if he really meant it the US was ready to go ahead with ?peace talks? only if the ?peace talks? would guarantee the freedom of the people in West Berlin. Most people believed that Khrushchev did not realize that by threatening Kennedy he would get the US to leave West Berlin. (SEE OHP FOR PICTURES) **** These pictures show the impact of humans In the paragraph when the men enter the novel the scene starts to have a darker atmosphere. The shade Climbs up the hills. This is not only an example of the personification of the shadow, but it also dims the previously bright setting. This could be because George and Lennie are arriving. Darkness shows evil and although I wouldnt call George or Lennie evil the animals do not want them there. The way the two men enter seems to be very significant. George walks before Lennie even though there is enough room for them top walk side by side. This shows Georges protectiveness and leadership over Lennie. It also shows Lennie is mentally younger and more simplistic because he is always copying like a child is. (SEE OHP GEORGE AND LENNIE WALKING) Lennies simplicity is also graphically portrayed when he is likened to different animals. For example when Steinbeck says: His huge companion dropped his blankets and flung himself down and drunk from the surface of the green pool, he drank with long gulps, snorting into the water like a horse. This simile shows that Lennie is not only as strong as a horse but also has manners like one. He is later referred to as bear-like in his actions and features. It is described that he is Dragging his paws Obviously, being a human, he has hands not paws but because they are so large and because of what he is doing with them they are called paws. There is a sequence in the first chapter where Lennie imitates Georges exact movements-this show that Lennie needs to copy because he cant think for himself and he is not confident. (ANDREW COPYS DAN AS LENNIE DOES GEORGE) As you can see I was playing the role of George, the intelligent character and Andrew the slow, simple character. Yet another example of George being the more confident character is when he starts to get angry and begins to shout, complaining about the bus driver. Whilst George is doing this Lennie is very quiet and acts timidly. It is, however easy for the reader to be sympathetic towards George and understand his anger. Because Lennie isnt very clever, George often has to repeat himself many times. At one point George has to ask Lennie three times to put down a dead mouse that he has got. When they want to eat, Lennie wants to go to the ranch that they are headed towards but George realises that they will have to do more work if they go straight away so he says no. Lennie cannot understand this. This shows that Lennie just wants immediate satisfaction whereas George can look at what will happen in the future. It is also possible to see a kind, caring side through Georges anger and frustration. He often says Aw Lennie when his friend gets upset about something and comforts him. The first chapter gives an in-depth impression of what the two main characters personalities are like and how they have similarities and differences.

The way we talk and the language that we use is heavily influenced by the people we are around all the time. Due to our diverse culture, our population consists of many people who act and do things differently. This affects the way we talk to each other whether it be with friends or family. A person who grows up around a group of people who are very proper and speak eloquently tends to incorporate that into the way he or she talks. If a person grows up around people who curse constantly, obviously that person is going to grow up to use vulgar language. This is true in the case of Weaver, a M.F.A. candidate at George Mason University, who refers to his use of profanity in terms of self-identity, proclaiming, â€Å"So I grew up into who I am† (182). Scott Weaver grew up around his dad’s baseball team who constantly swore at every chance they got. Because he was around them all the time, the vulgarity that he heard everyday was incorporated into his language. Scott Weaver said, â€Å"I speak English adequately, Spanish horribly, and Profanity fluently. I thrive on it. I live through it. I’m only comfortable in class if the professor lets some curse words slip. Vulgar language is my home† (182). In a way I sort of grew up with the same kind of peers that Scott Weaver had. I went to school at La Salle Academy which is predominantly comprised of African Americans who have no problem saying the â€Å"N-word† to each other in practically every sentence. It is also happens to be an all boys school so with no girls for anyone to impress, the amount of cursing is out of control. Since I went to that school for four years, I have gotten used to all the cursing and have used it in my vocabulary as well. Although everyone around me would say the â€Å"N-word† it has never caught on with me. Since the word was so popular, Hispanic people would say it as well as white people who would try to â€Å"act black†. But no one would have a problem with it particularly because it is â€Å"cool to be black.† I don’t live or thrive on curse words myself like Scott Weaver but I use them a fair amount. Some even say that my cursing is multilingual. I speak English and slang fluently because most of my peers speak a lot of slang, as well as all the television and music that I am exposed to everyday.

REPORT 1 CASE ASSIGNMENT: Disney The Happiest Brand on Earth In 2006, Disney’s Pixar released the hit movie Cars, which grossed $462 million worldwide. Since then, Cars merchandise has generated over $2 billion in sales each year. Pixar has since created a series of Cars shorts to be aired on the Disney Channel with a subsequent DVD release. A Cars sequel is in the works for 2011, and an online virtual gaming world is set to release 2009. In 2012, Disney’s California Adventure theme park will open its 12-acre Cars Land attraction.At Disney, the brand is the name of the game, and cross-platform success of the Cars franchise is by no means the exception to the rule. Disney also has the Jonas Brothers, Hannah Montana, High School Musical, the Disney Princesses, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the list goes on and on. The man behind the magic is Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, who has lead a dramatic revitalization of the Disney brand since succeeding longtime head Michael Eis ner in 2005. When he first took the post, his strategy shifted Disney’s focus around its stable of â€Å"franchises. These franchises are distributed across Disney’s multiple company platforms and divisions, such as Disney’s various television broadcasts platforms (the Disney Channel, ABC, ESPN), its consumer products business, theme parks, Disney’s Hollywood Records music label, and Disney’s publishing arm in Hyperion, just to name a few. Iger’s franchise strategy has been supported by the other major move he made upon first becoming CEO. On his first day on the job, Iger told the board that revitalizing Disney’s animation business was a top priority, which would be improved through the purchase of Pixar.As part of Iger’s franchise strategy the deal made perfect sense, as many of Disney’s latest TV shows, Disneyland rides, and merchandise were based on Pixar characters. Finding a new market to push the Disney franchise became a priority as well. With the Disney brand growing flat, it was becoming evident that Disney had missed some opportunities for broader success due to a narrowing of its target market, which was at the time largely associated with younger children.Iger’s first move was to broaden Disney’s viewership by moving the Disney Channel from premium to basic cable and launching local versions in key global markets. Then, Disney began pushing franchises to capture the rapidly growing tween market. Putting its support behind the Disney channel’s High School Musical and Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers, who were emerging out of Disney’s music label, Disney quickly generated a series of franchise juggernauts in the tween girl market.Though Disney’s focus has remained on family-friendly fair, Iger has shown a new willingness to look to even broader markets if they fit with the Disney brand. Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean, the first Disney fi lm with a PG-13 rating, based off the classic theme park ride, played a major role in refocusing the brand, and it also helped expand the Disney appeal to older kids and even adults. The Pirates and Cars franchises also provided preliminary steps for Disney’s latest endeavors to crack the tween boy market, one traditionally difficult for media companies to sustainably capture.Their efforts focus around the new Disney XD channel, which has a broad range of offerings, such as potential new franchises like the science fiction action-adventure show Aaron Stone and showcases of new musical talent. Disney will also be able to leverage ESPN to create original sports- based programming. The channel will be accompanied by a Disney XD Web site, which will promote the channel’s programs, as well as offer games and original videos, social networking, and online community opportunities.As it continues to expand and provide new franchise offerings, Disney looks to have relatively st rong momentum, even in the midst of rising economic challenges.
